UK Family Visit Visa: A Guide for Pakistani Sponsors in the UK

Understanding UK Family Visit Visas — What Sponsorship Means

If you are a Pakistani national living in the UK on a visa, as a British citizen, or as a British permanent resident, and you want to bring your parents or family members to visit, the UK Standard Visitor Visa process still applies to your family members — but your role as a sponsor becomes a critical part of their application. Understanding what sponsorship means and what you need to provide is the difference between a strong application and a weak one.

A sponsor does not guarantee the visa will be approved — that decision rests with the Home Office. But a well-documented sponsor significantly strengthens the application for the family member applying from Pakistan.

Who Can Sponsor a UK Family Visit Visa?

Any person legally residing in the UK can write a sponsorship letter for a visiting family member. This includes British citizens, British permanent residents (Indefinite Leave to Remain), and those on valid UK visas including work visas, student visas, and family visas. Your immigration status and the strength of your financial position both affect how much weight your sponsorship carries.

What the Sponsor Provides

  • Sponsorship / invitation letter — a personal letter explaining your relationship to the applicant, confirming you will host them, and detailing your financial ability to support their visit
  • Copy of your passport or BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) — proof of your UK immigration status
  • Proof of UK address — utility bill, council tax bill, or tenancy agreement in your name
  • 3 to 6 months of UK bank statements — showing your ability to support the applicant financially during their stay
  • Employment letter or payslips — if employed in the UK, confirmation of your income
  • Proof of accommodation capacity — that your home can accommodate the visiting family member

What the Applicant in Pakistan Provides

  • Valid passport and old passports
  • 3 to 6 months bank statements — showing their own financial activity in Pakistan (even if funds are sponsored)
  • Evidence of ties to Pakistan — property, pension, spouse remaining in Pakistan, health conditions requiring return
  • Sponsorship letter from UK-based family member
  • Cover letter — explaining purpose of visit, relationship to sponsor, and intent to return
  • Relationship evidence — birth certificates, family registration documents showing the relationship to the sponsor

Special Considerations for Elderly Parents

Applications for elderly Pakistani parents visiting UK-based children are extremely common — and commonly refused when not prepared well. Key issues to address include: why the parent needs to visit now (specific reason — grandchild's birth, family reunion, health check), the parent's ties to Pakistan (property, other children remaining in Pakistan), and the parent's return plan and reason. If parents have no employment and are retired, their ties to Pakistan through property ownership and remaining family become even more critical.

💡 Many UK family visit visa applications fail because the applicant in Pakistan submits a weak application while assuming the UK-based sponsor's position will carry the application. Both sides of the application need to be strong. The UK spouse's financial strength does not substitute for clear Pakistan ties in the applicant's own documents.

Common Reasons UK Family Visit Visas Are Refused

  • Insufficient ties to Pakistan in the applicant's own profile — relying entirely on the UK sponsor without demonstrating personal reasons to return
  • Weak or generic sponsorship letter — a template letter without specific personal details of the relationship and plans
  • No proof of relationship — failing to include birth certificates or other relationship documentation
  • Sponsor's immigration status unclear — not including a clear copy of the UK sponsor's BRP or passport
