Canada Study Permit guide for Pakistanis

Why Canada Is the Top Study Destination for Pakistani Students

Canada has become the number one international study destination for Pakistani students, and for good reason. Canadian universities offer world-class education, the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) provides up to 3 years of work rights after graduation, and the Express Entry system creates a genuine pathway to Canadian Permanent Residency for graduates who work in skilled occupations. For Pakistani families investing in international education, Canada offers the most complete long-term value proposition.

The The Study Permit Process — One Standard Pathway (SDS Ended 8 Nov 2024)

Canada offers one standard study permit pathway. IRCC permanently ended the Student Direct Stream (SDS) on 8 November 2024 — SDS is no longer available to any applicant. The process described below is the sole current route. The standard process is described here: applicants submit their application online at ircc.canada.ca, include all required documents, and pay CAD 150 + CAD 85 biometrics (where required). For further detail: the former faster-processing SDS required GIC, IELTS, aote: the Student Direct Stream — SDS — was permanently ended by IRCC on 8 November 2024 and is no longer available to Pakistani applicants). The standard process is now the only pathway. Processing was specifically designed to accelerate for eligible countries including Pakistan, and typically results in faster decisions when all requirements are met upfront.

Standard Study Permit

Available to all applicants. Requires acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), financial proof, SOP, and supporting documents. Processing times have varied significantly — from 8 to 16 weeks or longer depending on application volumes.

Student Direct Stream (SDS)

Available for Pakistani applicants who can meet specific upfront requirements: IELTS Academic with minimum 6.0 in all four bands, a CAD $10,000 Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from an approved Canadian bank, upfront medical exam results, and a valid acceptance from a DLI. With a strong, complete application the standard process can also move relatively quickly — apply at least 6 months before your programme start date.

What Is a GIC and How Do You Get One?

A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is a financial instrument where you deposit CAD $10,000 into a special Canadian bank account. The funds are held for one year and released monthly once you arrive in Canada, providing you with living cost support during your studies. The GIC demonstrates to IRCC that you have sufficient funds for your first year of living expenses in Canada.

GICs can be purchased from IRCC-approved institutions including Scotiabank, TD Bank, CIBC, and several others. The process can be completed online from Pakistan. Processing the GIC typically takes 1 to 3 weeks — factor this into your application timeline.

The Statement of Purpose (SOP) — The Most Critical Document

The SOP is the most important document in a Canadian study permit application for Pakistani students. IRCC uses it to assess whether you are a genuine student who intends to return to Pakistan after completing your studies.

A strong SOP addresses: why you want to study in Canada specifically, why you chose this particular programme and institution, what your academic background and career goals are, how this Canadian qualification helps you achieve specific goals in Pakistan, and what your ties to Pakistan are — family, employment plans, property, future opportunities.

⚠️ A weak or vague SOP is the leading cause of study permit refusals for Pakistani applicants. A SOP that says "I want to study in Canada because it has good universities" without specific, personal reasoning is treated as low-quality and is grounds for refusal.

Complete Document Checklist

  • Valid passport
  • Acceptance letter from a DLI
  • GIC receipt (CAD 10,000 from an approved institution) or 6-month bank statements (standard)
  • IELTS Academic scores — minimum 6.0 in all bands — exact requirements vary by programme and university for the standard
  • Medical examination results — from an IRCC-approved panel physician in Pakistan
  • Police clearance certificate — from the National Police Bureau of Pakistan
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP) — personalised, specific, credible
  • Academic transcripts — all previous qualifications
  • Biometrics — CAD $85 in addition to study permit fee of CAD $150

After Graduation: PGWP and the PR Pathway

After completing a programme of at least 8 months at a DLI, most graduates are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) valid for up to 3 years. This open work permit allows you to work anywhere in Canada in any occupation. Canadian work experience gained on a PGWP qualifies for Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class), which is a direct pathway to Permanent Residency for skilled workers. Many Pakistani graduates obtain Canadian PR within 1 to 3 years of completing their studies.
